Micromax is doing very well for itself. It is the third top mobile handset manufacturer in India by revenues, just behind Nokia and Samsung. Apparently it is doing well in the Android segment too. As per this news, 15% of Micromax sales are from Android phones. If true, that’s mighty impressive.
Micromax so far has 3 Android phones, Micromax A60, Micromax A70 and Micromax Bling 2. All three phones are sub-10K phones with decent specifications. Micromax has more than 40 phone models in its product portfolio and it achieved a place in the top 3 by selling feature handsets. With Android added to the portfolio and already contributing 15% to the sales, Micromax will bolster its third position though it might not yet challenge Samsung.
Micromax sells more than a million handsets per month. However the news of Total Tele doesn’t specify whether the sales are in terms of units or revenues. If it is units, Micromax might be selling anywhere between 1-1.5 million Android handsets for the year 2011. That’s not a bad figure at all. If it is revenues, which I highly doubt, Android might be a money spinner for Micromax. But that is highly unlikely.
Is Micromax really selling 150,000 Android phones per month in India?

150,000 is small number for the vast Indian Mobile market. I'm sure that's easily achievable!

It is a achievable number given India’s 800+ million users. The surprising thing is the adoption of Android phones for a company like Micromax which made its mark by selling predominantly feature phones.
Let me find out some figures on the number of Android phones in India first.

Given that we control the second largest market, we should start designing OS specially for ourselves.
