In India, sub-Rs 20,000 smartphones command a massive 83% market share; out of which Rs 11,000 to Rs 20,000 range is nascent, at 13% share (as per June, 2016 report).
However, the analysis by telecom experts predict a substantial increase in the market share of Rs 11,000 to Rs 20,000 budget smartphones, as the youth are now more inclined towards games and videos, and this range of smartphones can give optimal experience for both.
However, pretty interesting things have happened in the last few years, in the world of smartphones and technology; and the ‘Selfie Phenomenon’ is one of them. In 2014, The Verge asked why companies are right now focussing more on the front camera, compared to rear camera, and the answer was found pretty soon, when selfies actually became a global, Universal trend.
If you are a selfie lover, but have a budget of Rs 20,000 to buy a smartphone, then which one will you choose? Vivo, Oppo and Gionee, all three have recently launched selfie-focussed, and selfie-centric phones in the market, and interestingly, all three of them are sub-Rs 20,000 range.

Vivo V5s @ Rs 18,990
At the fag end of April, Vivo, the official sponsors of IPL 2017, launched their next-generation of Vivo V5 series, called Vivo V5s, for those who are selfie-obsessed, and wish to click more and more selfies with their smartphones.
In terms of selfies, there are two high-points: 20 mega-pixel front camera, which is no doubt top rated and of high quality, as we experienced it first hand.
The other is the special ‘Moonlight glow’, which compliments the front camera, and gives that extra push for that awesome selfie. As per Vivo, the moonlight glow gives the selfie a ‘natural, vivid’ glow, which is hard to find in other smartphones.
The front camera also has an additional capability: the feature to take wide-arc group selfies, which is a value-add on.
Some other prominent features include:
- AK4376 Hi-Fi Audio chip on board for audio enhancements
- Android 6.0 Marshmallow
- 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6750 chipset
- 4GB RAM
- 2.5D curved glass design
- 64GB internal storage, up to 256GB storage expansion
- 3000mAh battery
- Fingerprint sensor (hailed as world’s fastest)

Overall, a solid investment for the selfie-lover.

Smart Facial Recognition feature is a proprietary feature of Oppo, which automatically suggests which lens should be used for a particular selfie. However, you cannot change the options.
