Nokia has entered into a patent license agreement with Apple. According to this both Nokia and Apple will withdraw all their complaints against each other. Apple will be paying Nokia royalties. Looks like this is the season for loyalties. HTC is already paying royalties to Microsoft for using Android, making Microsoft a big mobile winner. I know. Don’t even ask.
For Nokia any kind of financial relief is a godsend. Now that it is all set to lose its smartphone crown to Samsung and Apple, Nokia can use some monies to run its operations until Microsoft saves its sinking boat.
Nokia is an early entrant into mobile industry and has boatload of patents to its name. As per Nokia there are 10,000 patent families. It is hard to be in mobile game without stepping on one of those patents. Nokia will look to both Apple and Microsoft for resurrection.
What patents were settled on and what kind of monies will be exchanged is not known. HTC, it is rumored, will pay $5 to Microsoft for every Android device sold. Would it be a similar arrangement for every iPhone sold – if the patents are related to technology in iPhone? Also would the royalties be paid for the phones/devices already sold? An interesting thing to know.
