Japan will soon get a Android based Yahoo phone. Now that’s a mouthful. Apparently, Yahoo is the biggest website in Japan and someone out there thought a phone filled with Yahoo apps and properties is a good idea. Contrary to the Facebook phone, Yahoo phone will not have a hardware button to access Yahoo. Instead the phone is speculated to be pre-loaded with various Yahoo properties like Yahoo Japan Auctions, Yahoo Loco etc…
The phone will be a re-branded Sharp Aquos phone which runs Android 2.3 OS, has a 4-inch LCD display, 8 megapixel CMOS camera, Bluetooth, WiFi and a eWallet facility.
I don’t have anything against calling a phone, ‘some’ phone. After all that is branding or segmentation, depending on who is selling. In India, we have a huge segmentation in the feature phone category. If the western world has an app for everything, then we have a phone for everything – Senior citizen phone, phone for the visually impaired, water proof phone and phones for avid devotees.
Looks like companies across the world are trying hard to differentiate and are launching segmented phones by loading a boat load of apps on it. With feature phones, it at least had some kind of innovation. With smartphones the only way to differentiate is with the apps. Would it work? Time will tell, but I’m still waiting for my Angry Birds phone.
Facebook phone : check. Google phone : aren’t all phones Google phones. Yahoo phone : check. Angry Birds phones : Where the hell is it?
