Desktops and laptop market in India achieved a 6.2% growth in the first quarter of 2011. 2.6 million units were shipped in the Q1 2011. The 6.2% growth is over Q4 2010. Growth is driven by laptops aka mobile PC shipments which grew by 23%. Dell, HP, Acer, Lenovo and HCL are the top 5 vendors with a combined market share of 57.5%. HCL is the only Indian vendor to figure in the top 5 list. This list, I suspect, doesn’t include tablet PC’s.
None of the top 5 vendors has a tablet in the market. Acer is the only one with a tablet but that was released only recently. If only 2.6 million of laptops and desktops are shipped to India, by that measure, a million tablets looks like a big win. Even if half a million tablets are shipped to India at the end of 2011, that would still be great achievement for tablets in general.
As always, these are all shipments my friends. And we all know that no. of units shipped != no. of units sold.
