We haven’t yet fully digested the Microsoft buying Skype deal and we got one more to munch on. Rumor mill suggests that Microsoft will start talks to buy Nokia’s mobile unit by end of this year. Following Nokia’s moves off late, this can be more than just a rumor.
Nokia first puts Windows Phone 7 on all of its new smartphone line. Nokia outsources Symbian development to Accenture. Nokia rebrands Ovi services to Nokia services. Looks like Nokia knows what it is doing and it is strictly playing towards a consolidation strategy. With Microsoft having both its feet in Nokia’s territory, Microsoft buying Nokia business unit is only a logical ending.
What will happen to Nokia if they sell the mobile unit?
TechCrunch has a pretty good explanation. It could become the IBM of Handsets. Not sure if handset market needs a consultant.
