Micromax has now made a tie-up with CyanogenMod Inc. for launching its YU phones powered up by CyanogenMod OS. YU Televentures is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Micromax which will launch ‘YU’ branded phones.
Providing timely updates to phones has always been an issue to the manufacturers. Some of the major OEMs making Android phones do not provide updates to their high-end phones even after 6 months of the launch of the Android update. This leaves their users disappointed as they want more and more features along with extra performance and power efficiency.
HTC had announced they will update their phones to the latest Android OS within 90 days after the source code is released to the OEM’s. Motorola is also pushing out quick Android updates to its phones giving tough competition to Nexus phones.
Sadly, not all manufacturers are doing this since they need a lot of time for improving their skin (interface). And I won’t blame them too. If they seed newer OS to their phones with the same interface then also the users will complain.
That’s why this strategy of Micromax makes so much sense. CyanogenMod be will providing timely updates to its YU series of Android phones. This will offload a lot of work from Micromax and would they able to focus more on the design and other aspects of the phone.
The first smartphone from YU will be available online from December 2014.
These YU phones will be available only online and hence should be available at a much lower cost giving tough competition to affordable phones under Rs. 10,000.
The Hardware
There is no information about the hardware of the upcoming YU phones but we suspect them to be similar to current offerings, but only at a lower price tag. So, all of them would at least be based on a quad-core processor and have 1 GB RAM at the very least.
What are your thoughts about these YU phones? It is a Micromax subsidiary providing timely Android updates to its phone. Are you feeling excited about it?
