HTC the official manufacturer of Facebook phones – HTC Salsa and HTC ChaCha will be launching them in India. HTC Salsa is a full touch screen phone and HTC ChaCha is a 4 row QWERTY phone + touchscreen, which actually looks slicker and neater for a QWERTY phone. The price of Salsa could be Rs. 23500 and ChaCha would be Rs. 18300. These prices are indicative and the actual prices could be different.
HTC Salsa
3.4 inch full touch screen with 480×320 resolution, 600 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 5 megapixel camera, VGA front-camera and all the good stuff (WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, GPS)
HTC ChaCha
HTC’s obsession with touch+type screen is growing by the day. ChaCha is a touch+type phone with a 2.6 touch screen and 4 row QWERTY keypad. 600 MHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 5 megapixel camera, VGA front-camera and all the good stuff (WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, GPS) are on-board. Just as HTC Salsa.
Both will be powered by Android 2.4 (Gingerbread)
What’s facebook about them?
There’s nothing really facebook about them except for having a dedicated Facebook key to launch the app. Or may be I am missing something. Do we really need a special key to launch an app? Would Skype have a key and sell the phone as a Skype Phone? Now that Windows has bought Skype may be that would become a Windows phone. Anyways, it gives just a good kicker to Facebook’s ego and probably Zuckerberg’s too, who by the way has bought a $7 million home just because he couldn’t buy Skype.
Update : On twitter from @shahpriya : What’s next? HTC jive and HTC bangra
PS : HTC Jive and HTC Bhangra are not such a bad idea. Salsa isn’t that popular in India and ChaCha sounds like a sound to keep the dog away. If there is a time for localization, it is now.
