Sony will pull the plug on disc walkman in September, 2011. Sony has already pulled the plug on the cassette player walkman last year. This brings the complete and consummate death of a iconic music player which gave us the first taste of portable music.
This generation might fail to grasp why a walkman existed in the first place, it is the first product in the grand evolution of portable music. iPod is a logical extension of a Sony Walkman, where a cassettes and CD’s were replaced with digital music on flash memory yet leaving the portability in tact.
We grew up with these things. My first steps in to the digital world started with walkman, floppy disc and later a disc man. All three products have now reached the status of an antique, if you still manage to have one of them.
RIP walkman. A moment of silence for the first real portable music player, if you are old enough to have one. Never mind if you belong to the iPod generation. It would be a bunch of us old guys.
