Spice which is rechristened as S Mobility is aggressively building its mobile Internet products portfolio. It is now rumored to be launching 2 more Android tablets in the next 2 months.
Spice already has an Android tablet called Spice MiTab and on the specs alone it competes with other affordable tablets like Reliance 3G Tab and iBall Slide.
Spice’s new tablets will sport a 9.7 inch screen and will be powered by Gingerbread. Spice is planning to price these tablets in the sub-20K range.
Launching Android tablets though sounds glamorous, there are and will be, few takers for these tablets. This has been a perennial problem for tablet makers and only a few have understood the problem.
Huawei was the first one to understand the problem and decided to bundle Indian content with its new tablet. Amazon which is more focused on the US market has made its Kindle Fire tablet a moat to offer its ever growing cloud services.
Tablet makers at some point have to realize that launching an Android tablet is only half the battle. The other half of the battle is to make it useful to the users and giving them a reason to buy.
