Notion Ink’s Adam is finally available for pre-ordering. People who have been actively involved in commenting on Notion Ink blog will get the first preference and from the blog the details were already sent to the chosen few. I like people who keep promises. Especially when it involves a irresistible product which would challenge the incumbents. Apple’s iPad might have some real competition. This would be a test for both Adam’s hardware and Android’s Honeycomb operating system.
There are 6 variants of the device as described below :
- LCD Wi-Fi version will start at $375.33
- LCD Wi-Fi with 3G version at $425.33 (for limited period).
- Transflective version (Pixel Qi) will start at $499.45
- Transflective version with Wi-Fi only and 3G variants at $549.99
- 2 variants in 3G — 900 series and 850 series
The pricing would be the same in all countries. I liked the comment about pricing from the blog
Notion Ink will always follow One Price Policy for every country as we believe in Globalization and World being our market, not countries.
Adam comes in 6 colors with the default color being Matte Black.
OS – Honeycomb or Gingerbread
The OS on Adam is somewhere between Gingerbread and Honeycomb but tilting more towards Honeycomb. The support of views within views which is the feature of Honeycomb is present in Adam which will be shipped. In addition to that here are other specs :
- Better OpenGL ES, OpenSL ES support.
- SIP/VOIP
- Multi-touch Keyboard
- Better Copy, paste features
- Kernel Upgraded to 2.6.35
- Better View Support (Honeycomb) and
- Clean User Interface;
- Better Memory Management.

No NFC on Adam
There is no near field communications on Adam as they couldn’t find a use case for it. Absolutely. I cannot really imagine taking a 10 inch tablet to pay for my grocery bill. Do you?
Next version is Eve?
Notion Ink is suggesting of a next version for Adam which would be called as Eve. This would have near field communication and bunch of other interesting stuff.
Apple vs Adam
The blog which is hosted on the wordpress platform is now the ranking number two just behind Oprah’s “I am not gay” moment. The traffic has shot up to 300K page views for just today. If Apple gets through the marketing cycle by being secretive, Notion Ink took the exact opposite path. They broadcasted everything about the product while building it up. They even conducted polls to get the colors locked in. If Apple’s was marketing genius then Notion Ink’s would be marketing genius too. As they have generated huge interest in a product which they think is remarkable (and we agree with them).
Now it is upon the buyers to decide where Adam stands. Is it the product to beat iPad? Would it be a product which iPad itself wants to emulate? Would all tablets be compared with Adam instead of iPad? What do you think?
Looks like the Apple vs Adam fight is on.
