Reliance Communications has launched its 3G Android tablet at a price of Rs. 12999. The tablet is powered by Android 2.3 operating system, has a 7-inch touch screen and comes bundled with Reliance 3G data plans. Reliance 3G Tablet comes with 512 MB RAM, 2 megapixel rear camera and a front-facing camera. Reliance is offering a 4GB SD card free with the tablet.
Reliance 3G tablet is available in Reliance World and Reliance Mobile stores in Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata. Reliance will expand the tablets to 13 circles in the next few days.
Reliance 3G Tablet might not be available as a retail tablet and will only come bundled with the 3G plans. If you are planning to take one, here’s what the plans look like :
The tablet is launched by Reliance Communications which is led by the younger brother Anil Ambani. There were rumors or rather news that Reliance Industries, the elder Ambani’s company, has plans to launch a 4G tablet at a price of Rs. 4000. Reliance Industries has exclusive license for 4G spectrum.
Reliance Communications becomes the first operator to come up with a bundled offer. While there is no dearth of tablets in India, there is a constant search for the best and the cheapest tablet.
Does Reliance tablet fit the bill? Too early to say. Reliance’s tablet is manufactured by Chinese telecom behemoth ZTE and is powered by Android. Obviously the expectations aren’t high. Android tablets like the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab haven’t made the dent they were supposed to make. It would be unfair to expect a disruption from ZTE and much less from Android OS. The only way this tablet can make its way to consumers is through Reliance’s strong distribution channel. Even that is limited to 13 circles in which Reliance holds 3G spectrum. If Reliance plans to make it large then it has to tie up with other 3G operators.
