There is a rumor going on that an announcement about iPad 2 India might be coming in two weeks. This is coming from an insider as per CIOL. I want that to be true and already gave out three reasons why iPad2 will come to India. But something somewhere is amiss. We are talking about Apple here for crying out loud. It has never favored India in any of its launches. The numbers just don’t add up for Apple to spend the time and money on the logistics to get the iPad shipped from China to India.
India’s tablet consumption is at 8000 tablets per month thought the appetite is increasing. The appetite for high cost tablets is really low as proved by Samsung Galaxy Tab. No numbers are available but looking at the price cuts Galaxy Tab has gone through, the product did not do well.
Where will the iPads ship from?
Even the odds are defied in the cases outlined above, where will Apple get the iPads from to ship to India? Apple has already sold more than a million pads over the weekend and is out of stock on most counters. Its web orders now have a shipping time of 4-5 weeks. North America is Apple’s single biggest market. If the demand isn’t met there, Apple won’t even make amends to meet demand in new and untested markets. Does Apple have separate lot coming out of Foxconn’s factory just for India? I am not that optimistic. If it did, I hope they aren’t the bleeding iPads.
