World’s cheapest tablet, Aakash, will be Ubislate for retail customers

While yesterday’s Apple event turned out to be a damp squib, India is getting excited about its own low-cost tablet. The tablet is called Aakash and will be available for students at a cost of Rs. 1200. The retail version would cost Rs. 2999. That’s cheaper than Micromax Van Gogh phone. I’m not sure how true this is but as per this, it is available for retail customers.

Specifications

The tablet will have a resistive touch screen, will run Android 2.2 has a Connexant processor, 256 MB RAM, 2 GB memory, micro SD slot, and WiFi.

For Rs. 2999, you can’t really ask for more or less or not even comment, because there’s nothing like it in the market. The only question I would ask is, how usable would it be?

What’s Indian about the Aakash tablet?

For starters, it was ideated in India.

Isn’t that how all tablets go these days. Ideated in HQ, manufactured in China and assembled in Mexico.

Hope

Now this is a hope, not a wish. Because when it comes to launching tech products, history doesn’t serve us well. I still didn’t get over the $10 laptop which India unveiled, which turned out to be an electronic brick. I hope there really is a tablet and it delivers at least 50% of what it says it does.
