Samsung’s two prong strategy is paying off. It has used Android for mass shipments which has given itself a shot at the top 5 in the smartphone vendor space. Samsung’s own Bada mobile operating system has quietly made inroads and is now ahead of Windows Phone 7 shipments.
As per Canalys report, Samsung has shipped 3.5 million Bada powered phones which are at least a million more than Windows Phone 7 shipments. Close to 2.5 million WP7 powered phones could have been shipped. While units shipped is not equal to units sold, Microsoft has to pick up the manufacturing curve a little bit. It might not be manufacturing alone and there is a certain amount of demand element involved. May be that’s holding WP7.
A Russian tech blogger had gained a beat on Windows phones sales and it doesn’t look very optimistic. As per him, 674000 were sold till date. That means quite a few Windows phones left to be sold before we focus our attention next shipment.
Whatever the case is, WP7 needs to make more noise if it needs a piece of the fast growing pie. Nokia’s partnership might just be the much needed fillip to WP7, of course to Nokia too. Samsung, quietly is selling Android and Bada powered phones. Only to tell the world (read Nokia) that being flexible helps.
