India, China hot smartphone markets!

When it comes to smartphone OS and sales, Android powered phones are ruling the roost. Apple’s iOS and Apple phones are continuing to increase their market share and Apple has bolstered its number 2 position with 19% market share. Nokia, Apple, RIM, Samsung, HTC, LG and Motorola are occupying the top 7 positions. 101 million smartphones were shipped globally in Q1 2011.

Smartphone OS

Android continues to top the charts. 35.7 million Android powered phones were shipped. Nokia has shipped 24 million and majority of them should be Symbian powered. 19.2 million iOS phones were shipped in the same period. RIM powered devices were in the fourth spot and Samsung Bada OS powered units should probably come in for the fifth spot. Samsung has shipped 3.5 million of their Bada units.

Regions

APAC is the hottest market right now for smartphones. It has surpassed EMEA region to become the leading destination for Smartphones. 37.3 million smartphones were shipped to APAC region while 32.3 million smartphones were shipped to EMEA region. North America has a 24.7 million shipments. APAC region has registered a 98% year on year growth. Highest for any region.

China, India and South Korea in the APAC region are leading the smartphone wave registering triple digit growth.

 

Manufacturers

Nokia despite a decline in market share still holds the top position with 24% market share (24.2 million units shipped). Nokia is still numero Uno in 28 countries including China. My guess is it is still number one in India too. APAC is the biggest region for Nokia too with 53% of shipments in the region.

Apple continues to be Apple. It has shipped 19.2 million units and occupies the second position with 19% market share. US is the biggest market for Apple with 31% share in the country. iPhone 4 on Verizon Wireless is a big hit for Apple. Of course, everything Apple does is a hit these days.

Samsung has shipped 3.5 million Bada powered smartphones. Around 2 million Windows Phones were shipped and Bada has beaten Windows Phone 7.

The individual shipments of each vendor is not readily available. HTC continues to be a top vendor for Android phones. LG has surpassed Motorola in shipments to occupy the sixth place.
