Porn is a big industry and like any other industry it is expanding in to mobile segment. Since porn is as close to the mobile near your, kids with mobiles are vulnerable to it. Not just images but videos too are a big rage. Parents have more than one medium to worry about now. Like a PC you cannot just install a porn filter or an anti-virus software in the mobile phone and be done with it. There isn’t a good system. Samsung has filed a patent which might change that.

The software looks for the image with large portions of exposed skins, blocks the image immediately and sends a copy to another mobile phone. Finding large portions of exposed skins is still subjective but a good idea nevertheless. While the new solution from Samsung will not stop the MMS scandals widespread in this country, it will make a good attempt at filtering out porn, if and when it comes out.
As for filtering out videos there is research going on and the solution doesn’t come from Samsung. It comes from researchers at University of Colorado and McGill University in Montreal. An algorithm is piloted on Chatroulette.com to filter out misbehaving videos. The algorithm blocks a video with overexposed content.
We still have a long way to go on keeping the kids safe. No one said technology will solve all your problems.
