Stop kowtowing to the folks in the US or paying exorbitant sums for the gray market folks, iPad is coming to India. This time it looks more real. OG reports that iPad 2 will be available in India from April 28-29 at a starting price of Rs. 27900. Availability will be via Vijay Sales, Croma and Reliance iStores. As you know there are hardly rumors in the tech world, something always comes out of that rumor.
Leaving Apple’s step motherly treatment to India aside, there is a whole lot of good news which is bundled in this one. First of is the cost of the tablet, Rs. 27900 for 16GB WiFi version. This is the same as that of for iPad 1. Secondly, the India gets its iPad 2 officially in less than three months. This isn’t the case with iPad 1 which came to India one year after its US launch. HomeShopping network which was selling iPads for Rs. 44000 can take a breather now. It probably should cut down the prices by 40-50%.
How true is it this time?
I must say as true as it can get. Tim Cook of Apple has announced that iPad 2 will be released in 13 countries starting next week. There is no confirmation whether India will be on that list but we would be shocked if it isn’t. India is a booming market for all things digital and it augurs well for Apple’s image in India.
At a price of Rs. 27900, if Apple has the supply, it would technically push all other sub-standard tablets coming to India. Motorola Xoom better watch out on the pricing.
