The HP 7 Voice tab is one of the affordable voice calling tablets with 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity options. It comes with a price tag of Rs. 10,500 approx. and can be bought from retail stores offline and online.
HP is one of the most trusted manufacturers for computers and its peripheral hardware like printers and scanners. Let’s see if its voice tablet also has the same genes to continue its legacy.
The price segment of Rs. 10-15k doesn’t have too many good voice calling tablets to choose from and this review of HP 7 Voice tab will help you decide if it’s a good buy for you or not.
User Experience
Design
The HP Voice Tab looks just great. You would feel like you are looking at an expensive tablet, but you’re not. The front side has a metallic grille for the earpiece having a front cam left to it. The microphone is present just below the display.
The right side houses the microSD card slot along with duo button combinations of volume rockers and power button. The top side flanks a 3.5 mm audio jack.
The top portion of the back side houses a 5MP AF camera along with an LED flash. The back side also houses the micro SIM slot under the removable panel. You’d also find one loudspeaker under this panel and one at the right bottom portion of the back side.
Talking about build quality, the tablet doesn’t feel cheap at all. The back side is made of polycarbonate and has matte finish. The sides have a thin plastic rim at their centre.
Fits in trousers pockets and is good to hold.
User Interface
The HP 7 Voice tab runs on slightly customized version of Android KitKat v4.4.2. I didn’t encounter even a single lag during my 1 week testing time. All animations and transitions effects run buttery smooth.
Display
Voice Tab 7 has a 7 inch LCD display with a resolution of 1024×600 pixels. This translates to a lowly pixel density of 169.55 ppi. However, the thing is that you won’t be holding the tablet as close as you hold your smartphone. So, the perceived sharpness is just okay.
The colors rendered by the display are slightly dull for my liking. The horizontal viewing angles are also not good in the landscape mode.
The display is a fingerprint magnet but is very legible in the Sun when it’s not covered up with smudges.
Our Advice: I would advise you to install a matte-finish screen guard if you’ll be using the tablet outdoors for most of the times.
Voice Calling
The tablet has good cellular and Wi-Fi signal reception. The voice comes out clear and loud through the earpiece.
Browsing
Browsing is always a delight on such a large display. There is no lag or stutter while the page is being rendered by the browser or during double-to-zoom and scrolling. It just feels great.
Camera
The HP 7 Voice Tab has a 5 MP rear AF sensor with an LED flash. It also has 0.3 MP front camera for video chatting.
Both these cameras are good for nothing. The level of details captured by them is just useless. HP hasn’t installed its customized camera app so the users have to rely on the basic in-built Android camera app.
The overall UI is simple to use but doesn’t offer too many functions apart from HDR, panorama, exposure and white balance management, timer, scene modes and flash settings.
Check out the sample photos and be the judge of the imaging capabilities of the HP 7 Voice tab.
Multi-media
Audio
The audio quality produced by the dual stereo speakers at the back is very good. The volume is also more than required for indoor use. The sound coming out from the loudspeakers might get muffled when the tablet is placed on cushions or mattress or anything that’s not flat. This is perfectly normal and we’ve no complaints against it.
The HP 7 Voice Tab comes with Google Play Music pre-installed.
It lets you create playlists and add a sound track to queue. It also comes other standard features like Repeat, and Shuffle.
Formats supported:

- aac- Yes

Video
The stock video player has a very basic interface. It doesn’t support sliding gestures for changing brightness and volume but supports basic features like touch to pause.
It plays all popular formats till full HD (1080p) without any hiccups.

Final Verdict
HP 7 Voice tab is good for entertainment purposes like watching movies and listening to music, and browsing the web. It has average battery backup with great performance. But if you were looking at it for meeting your photography needs then it might disappoint you.
So, if you are not planning to get into photography with your tablet, then you should buy it at Rs. 9,500 approx.
