As they say the first million is the hardest. Samsung Electronics which started out selling noodles hasn’t entered the mobile space until 1988. From then it took 8 years to sell its first million devices.
Of course, 1988 is much different from the mobile scene we have in 2011. Samsung’s first 100 million sales came in 2005. Then it took 4 years to double the sales to 200 million units. The next 100 million to 300 million came in just 2 years. Nokia is the other manufacturer to sell 300 million units in a year.
Samsung shipped a total 1.6 billion phones so far.
Samsung’s Galaxy series phones are hugely successful and Galaxy S and Galaxy S2 together have sold 30 million units globally.
A Samsung phone is sold every 9 seconds
Though sales means profits in general terms, not so in the mobile phone world. Apple which has just one product line rakes in more moolah than Samsung. In Q2 Apple took a cool 66% of handset profits and left Samsung with just 15% profits. May be that’s something Samsung can fix.
