Dell has got into it too. Dell has officially got into the mobile phone or smart phone business. It has launched two Android 3G touch screen phones. Dell XCD28 costs Rs. 10599 and Dell XCD 35 costs Rs. 19000. Dell is not the original manufacturer for these phones. The phones XCD 28 and XCD 35 were launched elsewhere in the world by ZTE under the brand names ZTE Blade and ZTE Racer respectively.
Dell which launched its smartphone-cum-tablet called Streak learnt a lesson or two for India. The two smartphones launched are priced between Rs. 10K-20K and that is a decent segment to target. It is also the most crowded segment for touchscreen phones and especially Android powered phones.
Dell XCD 28
Dell XCD 28 has a 2.8 inch resistive touch screen with 240×320 resolution. It has a powerful 600 MHz ARM processor comes with Android 2.1 out of the box. XCD28 has an impressive 256 MB RAM onboard. Connectivity of XCD 28 is very good with Wi-Fi, 3G and Blutooth. A 3.15 megapixel camera with auto-focus should satisfy the need to click a quick picture. XCD28 has a standby time of 200 hours which is impressive but its talk-time is a cause of concern. XCD28 provides a talk-time of 3.5 hours. Might be because of the touchscreen but 3.5 hours is just very low and which would limit the mobility to city conditions. If you are travelling then you might as well carry a spare phone.
Dell XCD 35
Dell XCD 35 is a bigger and costlier cousin of XCD28. XCD35 packs in some impressive features. It sports a 3.5 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen with 480×800 pixel resolution. It runs Android 2.1 out of the box. XCD 35 has an improved talk-time of 4 hours but everything is the same as XCD 28. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, 3G, 3.5 mm audio jack, 3.15 megapixel camera are all on-board. XCD35 has an in-built memory of 256 MB which is low for a phone of this class. The memory can be expandable to 16GB through a micro SD slot.
The big difference between XCD 28 and XCD35 is the touch screen and probably an extra 30 minutes of talk time for XCD 35. Would that justify the Rs. 8K price difference? Don’t think so.
Stay tuned for more comparisons.
