Now this might be an anti-thesis but people, especially students and younger audience, are buying Blackberry phones. There’s no empirical evidence on why the younger audience is buying Blackberry phones but we have made some educated guesses.
The reason people are buying Blackberry phones is because of neglect from both Apple and Android.
Android’s battery sucks
Battery is the single most important factor on any smartphone and unfortunately there isn’t much of a improvement in this department. More so for Android phones. The common compliant for Android phones is how it has been a big drag on the battery.
This is a common thread. I haven’t individually tested these phones but have heard the complaints for HTC Wildfire, Samsung Galaxy S2 and Sony Ericsson Xperia.
It’s amazing that after all these years, Google isn’t really thinking to save some on battery with some intelligent software. Motorola has introduced its MotoCast which saves the battery on its new Razr by 30%.
What’s stopping Android from making such improvement available for its whole platform?
What about iPhone?
They problem with iPhone is it is from Apple. That comes with a price tag. iPhones are pricey, and stay that way until the phone model becomes irrelevant.
iPhones are still inspirational and don’t fit the price range younger audience is looking for.
Enter Blackberry
So where are the people who are pissed with Android’s battery life but can’t afford an iPhone going to? To Blackberry, of course.
The price range students and younger audience usually prefer is between Rs. 15000 to Rs. 25000. Apple doesn’t sell phones in that range and Blackberry has a slew of phones with its famous keypad.
Though SMS is a cheap way to stay in touch, students prefer Blackberry Messenger because of its intuitive and all-in-one place user interface.
So Blackberry seems to be thriving at least in India, but not because of its own innovations. But because of its competitors faults.
Blackberry will thrive until a cheaper iPhone or a longer running Android comes along.
