Huawei, the Chinese telecom equipment maker, is planning to launch a media tablet and a cloud phone in the next two months. Huawei Vision, is Huawei’s cloud phone where the services are tightly integrated with other cloud services. Huawei claims it to be first such phone. I’m not sure about that because iPhone 5 is lurking. Alibaba’s Aliyun powered phone is a cloud-based phone and so are Baidu’s Yi powered phones.
Huawei will also launch Android 3.2 powered Mediapad. This, Huawei claims to be world’s first too.
Chetan Bhagat as brand ambassador
There is another first which Huawei has actually done. It has signed up Chetan Bhagat (yes the writer) as a brand ambassador for a rumored 1 crore rupees.
We have seen Sonam Kapoor, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan as brand ambassadors for tech products. The common thread for these celebrities is they are actors. Chetan Bhagat isn’t an actor. A refreshing change from the norm and we should commend Huawei for doing this. Would it work? That’s an entirely different discussion for which we will have some answers in a years time.
Huawei wants to piggyback on Bhagat’s social media presence. Chetan Bhagat has 2 million followers on Twitter and Huawei thinks that would help their brand. Except that they have offered Bhagat to speak his mind about the products.
“They offered a brand-association in which I had no pressure to say nice things as such, unless I actually liked the product. I liked that concept," ET
If Chetan Bhagat thinks Huawei Mediapad or the Vision is a crappy product, he would say so. In his own style of course : 4th mistake of my life – buying a Huawei product.
Oh! I kid Chetan Bhagat.
I love his simple English writing by the way. Now whoever took my copy of “3 mistakes of my life”, can you return it back please?
Huawei Mediapad
Huawei calls this tablet world’s smartest, slimmest, lightest, and affordable tablet in its class. Interestingly, this tablet comes with Honeycomb 3.2 and not 3.1! Media pad’s is powered by Qualcomm’s 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor and has a 7 inch capacitive display with an awesome pixel density of 217 PPI. Compare that to iPad’s 132 PPI, Galaxy Tab’s 149 PPI and Motorola Xoom’s 160 PPI. Huawei’s Mediapad has full support for Adobe Flash 10.3. It has a HDMI output, supports 1080 full HD video and can play audio and video in all standard formats.
Huawei Mediapad sold in India will be loaded with electronic versions of Chetan Bhagat’s books.
Huawei Vision
Huawei Vision has a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, Bluetooth and WiFi. Vision comes with a 3D interface and is tightly integrated with cloud.
Tablets with Indian content
Huawei has promised to launch its tablets with Indian content. True to their promise now they have crystallized of what to expect from a Huawei tablet. I hope this isn’t all. Huawei should try to rope in Rashmi Bansal as well. Also loading the tab with Chandama and Amar Chitra Katha would be a good idea too.
Now when you bloat your tablet with rich content, the perils of price shooting up are always there. Watch out for that. Good content is no excuse for a high price. Not in India.
Can Chetan Bhagat create an image for Huawei in India?
