China is a huge market for almost everything. More so for mobiles and the apps that go with it. Ovi Store which isn’t as popular as its counterparts like Apple store, is strangely, leading in China. Ovi Store is used by 65.2% of the population. 57.7% population uses China Mobile’ Mobile market. China has 277 million mobile subscribers who access Internet using mobiles. Android market place for all its open source goodness has 13.7% market share followed by Windows (I know) and iPhone app store.
If we add up that’s more than 100%. Let me try and explain what the reasons could be. China Mobile might be operating an appstore which is device manufacturer agnostic. People who are using Ovi Store might be China Mobile’s subscribers and might be using that service as well to download some apps. That still doesn’t explain the count on the other app stores. They come up to 70%. I am not sure a handset can be used to access multiple app stores.
A similar study in India would be an interesting read. Nokia Ovi Store would be leading in India too because of the number of phones sold so far and also the free music download bundled (though discontinued now). The next slot would be a tight spot and Android might not be filling it. It could be one of the app stores launched by the telecom providers like Airtel, Aircel and Reliance. Aircel seems to be a likely second spot grabber.
Is there any similar study out there for Indian app stores?
