Umeox Apollo : Solar powered Android phone for $100

Umeox-630x325

Umeox Apollo is the world’s first solar powered Android phone. The phone looks rugged and is priced at sub-$100 to target emerging market users. India, Europe and Latin America will get this phone.

Apollo has a 3.2 inch touch screen with 320×480 display, 1G internal storage, 512 MB RAM,  FM radio, Bluetooth, 3 megapixel rear camera and 3.5 mm audio jack. It will run Froyo (Android 2.2). A basic smartphone.

Umeox Apollo has to be left in the sun for 2.5 hours to get full 100% charge. Sunlight should be used as a secondary source as a dead battery would need 17 hours of charging.

Umeox has teamed up with Dutch company Intivation for the solar panel at the back. Apollo is powered by Mediatek chipset, company which powers many low-cost feature phones across emerging markets.

Umeox Apollo has all the right ingredients including the price. It would be a great addition to India’s Android phone list. If Apollo is launched at its promised price of $100, it would be the cheapest Android phone available in India. Best part is, it might never run out of charge as India is famous for its summers.
